Annual CASC Ice Race Information Meeting
Attention
Ice Racers:
With the cooler weather upon us,
our thoughts are becoming more focused on the upcoming
2022 CASC Ice Race Season. Our new directors Brad Elkins
and Zack Wenzel have been working very hard with the
club organizers to get our ice racing series back on the
track for 2022. In the absence of the CASC Annual
Meeting, we will be holding a CASC Ice Race Information
Meeting on Sunday, November 7 @ 11:00 AM. This will be
held outdoors in the parking lot at the Mosport Karting
Center, 3233 Concession Rd 10, Bowmanville Ontario L1C
3K6. This will be an opportunity for the directors
and organizers to present our plans for 2022 and for
your questions to be answered. It will also be a great
opportunity for people interested in participating in
our series to get all the info they need to join us. We
look forward to seeing you there and getting our ice
racing series back on track.
It is with great sadness we
announce the passing of Rainer Brezinka. He had
suffered several strokes and has been in long term care
for many years. He died last year in July at 85 years
old. Rainer was a keen competitor in the club, starting
in 1967 up through to 2000. Most of his seat time was in
many Porsches in its many forms, 904, 906, 908, 910,
914-6 and the venerable 911. He also campaigned a
McLaren in the Can Am series in 1970 and 71, while still
driving a Porsche in other events. He was best known for
endurance racing, competing in the Daytona 24 hours,
Sebring 12 hours, Mosport 6 hours, and Watkins Glen
6-hour events.
Over the 25 years of endurance
racing, he had many driving partners from our club Fritz
Hochreuter, Rudy Bartling, Ahmad Khodkar, Horst
Petermann, Roman Pechmann, Gerhard Hirsch, and Peter
Aschenbrenner. A full list of Rainer’s drives can be
read
Here .
Not only did Rainer compete, he also
was a regular volunteer with our club. He filled many
roles including being President in 1979 - 1980, and
again in 1987 - 1988. He will be missed and remembered
fondly. The photo is of Rainer with one of his first
big wins, co-driving with Horst Petermann (click photo

"Another great friend has
passed. Ray introduced me to the DAC. We did a great
road trip through Europe together. We were at Le Man's,
Daytona, Sebring and many more. Ray, Rudy and myself
also attended F1 Indianapolis, saw Schumacher. It is
such a sad year, with the loss of so many
friends/members. My condolences to Julia." - John

Hi everyone. Spare a thought for our dear long time
member, the seemingly ageless Severin (Steve) Haas.
He
suffered a stroke last April 2020, which since then hindered
his speech and mobility. Then he was further challenged
with what doctors believe to be a second stroke in
September 2020. This so hampered his abilities such that the
best choice forward was to put him in long-term care for
his safety and well being.
Thankfully the family has
found a quality placement for him near to his home at
the Chartwell Westbury Long Term Care Residence on the West
Mall in Etobicoke where he's been for a few weeks
now, and is receiving quality care. Sadly he's not able
to receive gifts or cards or flowers but any comments
you want to pass along I'm sure
Stefan Haas will forward to him as the family gets
to visit him in turn once or twice a week. His speech is
starting to return though he's not yet ambulatory. He is
in good spirits and just taking life as it comes which
is all he really can do.

President Steven Scala Reports On CASC AGM
A ZOOM meeting was held for the CASC AGM on Saturday,
January 9, 2021. I missed the first 40 minutes because
the link that was sent to my old email address was
separate from supporting documents sent to my other
current address.
- The new ASN organization is
reportedly under-utilizing advice offered by existing
regions and is often incommunicado - ASN's
director/officer insurance is good through March 2021
- A new icerace director is needed to replace Steve
Manol - There was some discussion regarding electric
vehicle rules required for solo disciplines - further
moves toward a 'virtual office' were proposed to build
on observations of CASC Admin's remote work during
lockdown.
That's basically it. -

2021 Minden Ice Race Season
In
a "Letter to Ice Racers" today on FaceBook, Russ Bond,
representing SportCUP Inc., announced the intention to
hold ice racing in Minden, Ontario this 2021 season as a
joint effort between
SportCup Inc.,
Driveteq.ca and the Minden Kinsmen.
Calling the
series the "Minden Ice Championship", MIC events are not
connected in any way to the CASC, will be a modified
form, and will be held Saturdays only. All
activities are virtually "No Contact" including online
registration only and meeting current Covid19 protocol
and government guidlines.
Copy of the "Letter To Ice Racers"
below:
----------------------------------------------------
Open letter to the ice racers of Minden, Ontario
November 25, 2020
Fellow competitors,
My name is Russ
Bond.
The purpose of this letter is to try and
thoughtfully answer many of the current and potential
questions about the current state of ice racing in
Minden Ontario for the 2021 season from my perspective.
Here is what we know so far:
• COVID-19 has made ice
racing a greater challenge.
• In September, 2020, I,
with Rick Morelli of DriveTeq.ca formally sent a letter
to the CASC asking about the possibility of adding a new
“class” to the 2021 CASC Ice Race Series called the
DriveTeq Winter Challenge (the “DWC”): an
arrive-and-drive style race series where the presenter,
Sport Cup Inc. (owned by me, Russ Bond) owns all the
cars in the series.
• In early November, 2020, the CASC
cancelled the 2021 Minden ice racing season.
As a
businessperson, sometimes opportunity comes knocking
when and how you least expect it. That is the case here.
So, let me outline the events that have taken place
since the CASC made its decision. After I learned of the
CASC decision, I met with my partners at DriveTeq.
Together, we have been providing driver education days
in Minden during the ice racing season. This year, we
were hoping to integrate the DWC (as noted above) into
our programming. With CASC not operating its ice racing
series, we approached the Minden Kin about the
possibility of proceeding with their normal construction
of the Minden Fairgrounds ice circuit. We made our
proposal to the Kin on Monday, November 23, 2020 and
they accepted.
Subject to certain terms, Sport Cup Inc.
and DriveTeq will fund the construction and maintenance
of the Minden Fairgrounds ice circuit in order to allow
us the opportunity to continue with the programming we
have developed to date.
Having secured the opportunity
to continue the driver education and DWC portions of our
winter program (subject to COVID-19 related challenges
and requirements), we thought it was appropriate to
consider the opportunity to continue the long
established ice racing tradition in Minden. However, in
all the circumstances, it will need to be on a modified
basis and to the extent that we are able to gain
adequate support to make it reasonably feasible for us.
In that regard, Sport Cup Inc. entered discussions with
Steve Manol to assist with the attempted continuation of
ice racing generally in Minden. Cooperatively, we intend
to work together to host the Minden Ice Challenge (the
“MIC”) provided we get adequate support to function, as
noted above.
For clarity, we expect, if successful, the
MIC will be a “much modified” version of what we have
all been enjoying for many years.
The MIC Plan:
On
Saturdays – expected dates to follow – the MIC will be
run in conjunction with the DWC.
• The MIC will be
comprised of two initial classes. Rubber and Street
Stud. Depending on entries, a 12-car class will be
separated to have their own race. The Lexus Sport Cup
has advised us that they will field ‘at least’ 12 cars.
Other groups that are within these groups that can
generate enough entries ‘could’ have their own race. We
will also cap the total number of entries allowed.
• MIC
cars will be prepared to a rule set prepared by Steve
Manol (we expect substantially similar to the current
CASC rules).
• Competition Insurance will be provided by
Stoneridge.
• All MIC drivers will require a Sport Cup
Inc. license to compete.
• All entries, waivers and crew
lists will be done online. No “day of” entries. The
entire series is “contactless” – everything is done
online. Period.
• There are opportunities for paid
support staff, please contact me if you are interested
(russsportcup@gmail.com). We do not have or require
volunteers – anybody working will be paid.
• Racing will
be on Saturday only. There will be an Individual class
practice, qualifying race in morning and two class races
in afternoon.
• We are limiting class sizes due to
COVID-19 guidelines. First come, first served.
We are
currently in the process of finalizing details and will
be providing more information around pricing and other
logistics.
Now, of course there are several obstacles to
overcome in a COVID-19 environment and in the CASC’s
absence but we are optimistic. With some good fortune
and our experience operating events generally and in a
COVID-19 environment, we’re hopeful we’ll be able to
produce safe, compliant and fun racing events.
In
respect of the future of ice racing generally, we want
to be clear that should the CASC decide to return in
2022 (and we expect they will), I will be the first to
welcome them back.
I think we all want to see cars on
the ice for a number of reasons. Neither Sport Cup Inc.
nor DriveTeq sought or wanted to operate ice racing in
Minden. We made a proposal to JOIN them this year with
15 new entries. But given the circumstances, we’ve
decided to attempt to continue the racing at some
significant risk, financially and otherwise to us.
Normally, there is one thing we cannot control…the
weather. Now, its two.
The government can impose new
COVID-19 regulations at any time and operationally there
are a myriad of additional matters to consider. We hope,
to the extent possible, you racers will join us and
support our initiative this year to bring some ice
racing fun in an otherwise challenging time.
We’d also
be remiss if we did not mention our connection to the
Township and Kin. They, like many, have also been
impacted by the virus. We hope that our attempted
continuation and support of the ice racing tradition in
2021 will provide some assistance to the community that
has been kind to us.
Specifically thank you to the
Minden Kin, the Township and Tom Prentice for working
cooperatively to attempt to make this happen.
Again, we
hope you will join us in supporting the MIC this year.
For sure, it’s a huge change from what we are used to,
but we’re optimistic if we are able to run, we’ll have
just as much fun as always.
Stay tuned for more
information. We continue to monitor current events in
parallel with preparing to race. We’re hoping the stars
align in a safe and prosperous manner for all.

1st Ever DAC Online Meeting A Success!
Ten members joined in the 1st ever online DAC meeting
Wednesday May 13th over their internet from their homes
by connecting through the free group video meeting
service
www.zoom.us In attendance were: Candace
Calder (our meeting hostess) Steven Scala (club
pres.) Irene Ott (club treasurer) Mary McClure and
Mike Nilson Scott and Judy Miller Nancy Frey
Daniel Biral Sylvain Gilbert
It was really
good to see and interact live over video feed with
fellow members that one would not normally get to visit
with at a physical meeting because of the distance they
live from the GTA - places like Windsor and Ottawa.
Everyone enjoyed the experience and we're going to make
this a regular part of our monthly meetings even after
we start getting back to physical meets as we will be
able to have members from virtually (pun intended)
anywhere join in. It turned out to be real easy to join
the meeting and use Zoom. People started sharing photos
with the group from their devices and experimenting with
changing our backgrounds in our camera feeds. We chatted
for about 2 hours.
Most laptops, smartphones,
tablets etc. these days have a built-in camera and
microphone and are connected to the internet which means
you can participate.
So
come on and join in the meeting fun next month on
Thursday, June 4th at 8PM. Get your access to Zoom
sorted out now in advance of the next meeting by
clicking here >>>
www.zoom.us . It's really quite simple and it's
free. Looking forward to seeing people from far away
places join us.
Next months meeting ID# and
password will be available at a later date (probably a
couple days before the meeting).
Re-opening of Non-spectator Track Events Annouced
2020-05-14
As part of its Stage 1 Openings announcement today, the
province of Ontario has permitted "car and motorcycle
racing" to take place, without spectators. On the
surface, this appears to clear the way for practice,
lapping sessions and competition with no fans in
attendance.

impression was wow! at just how large the building is -
it's about the size of a large Superstore. There are
many makes and vintages of cars having some form of body
work being done to them including this beauty. The place
is very organized and super clean with processes really
streamlined. There are no less than 8 paint boothes.

Webpage Upgrades
- I've removed the old slideshow slider and
replaced it with a front page full width video that plays when you
first come to the website giving our webpage a more up
to date look and feel. Just click "Top" (rightside menu)
if you missed it getting here. Using the website is the
same as before, choose any of the menu buttons, scroll down
or click the scroll down chevron in the middle of the
screen which autoscrolls you to the next section on this
page. The
video used can be of anything but shouldn't be too
large a file size, at present the file size for this
video is 30MB
- incorporated the new DAC banners into the page's
background default road image
Thanks to
Mike Nilson for scanning and uploading some old Presse
newsletters. I have added links to them on the
Presse ePresse Archives
page. The above link is also always available by
clicking "Sitemap" on the right side
menu and then click the "Presse ePresse Archives" link
Website Upgrades
I've made a few minor upgrades and changes to the site
in the last few days: - replaced the background image
for the main page to, as Rick Creuzburg put it: "An
inviting road scene with blue sky!" - changed the
font colour for the right hand side menu links to a
lighter more visible colour - included clickable
"scroll down" chevrons at the end of each section of the
front page that when clicked take you to the next
section down the page - wrote some new code to
automatically reload a fresh copy of the website
everytime you visit the website. This way will ensure
you're viewing the most recent version of the website
- included the rightside menu missing link for "News" on
the "Members" page - Any "Upcoming Events" will now
be pinned to the very top of the "News" section under a
yellow headline stating "Upcoming Events" and will
remain there until the event is over at which point the
event entry will be moved furtherdown the "News" section
to join the regular yellow dated "News" items. Any
yellow dated "News" items will continue as before and
now appear below the "Upcoming Events" listings.
Mike Nilson has been busy scanning and uploading
historical articles and photos to Google Drive. I
have included a link on the "Historical" page to his
Google Drive archives. The
"Historical" page link can always be found on the side
menu or click here ....

DAC Go-Kart and BBQ Event - July 15
The D.A.C. is
having a Go-Kart event at 3S Go-Karts (Sutton) for Saturday July
15 at 10:30 AM -
https://www.3sgokartsinternational.com (MAP)
followed by a BBQ lunch and swim (bring lawn chair, towel,
swimsuit) at Karen Vereeken’s home at 41 Lake Drive North,
Keswick ( )
- beer and food supplied by Karen.
We need a minimum of 10
participants to get a discounted rate of $100 (tax inc) per
person. Each person gets 50 laps in one of 6 high performance
go-karts. They are specially tuned 6.5 hp Honda powered karts in
light weight racing chassis. Drive format is timed laps, Karts
will be spaced out (not wheel to wheel), however if we convince
the owner we can drive in a safe and capable fashion, he will
allow us to race wheel to wheel. In any case, we have several
options of how to split up our allotted track time.
We have
driver’s meeting at 10:45, and Karts roll out at 11:00. To race
you must have a minimum valid G-Class license. Racing suits and
helmets provided, unless you care to bring your own. Bring
closed footwear.
This is open to club members and their invited
friends.
Please note this is a weather dependent event. If it is
due to rain we will call it off Friday night and try to
reschedule for July 22nd. If we can count on you to come out
please confirm your attendance by emailing

03/09/2017 Ice Race
Season Cancelled
It was officially announced yesterday by our
ice race director Jonathan Rashleigh that the 2017 Ice Race
season has been brought to an end. Despite the best efforts of
the local Kinsmen the excessive rain and mild temperatures
earlier this week (and the same early the week before) washed
away enough of the snow and melted enough of the ice that the
season had to be cancelled. We only managed to complete 3 1/2
weekends out of 6 scheduled for this year. :( The DAC awards
banquet will be rescheduled sometime soon in Toronto - TBA

New Monthly Meeting Venue
The DAC held our monthly meeting last night for the first
time at The Blackhorn Steakhouse, 251 Ellesmere, Scarborough. It
was agreed by all in attendance at the meeting that we will
continue to hold our monthly meetings there.
Updated DAC Logo DAC member Kye Wankum is helping to promote our club and
hopes to attract club membership by a prominent display of our
logo on his race car. In the process of producing the "artwork"
required to get the logo printed for the car he has also given
our logo a bit of a facelift. The use of this revised logo on
Kye's car was given permission at the meeting
This
design will also be more vinyl graphic friendly
