This weekend was hosted by TLMC and
thanks to all who volunteered. I know some of you are fellow ice racers
so thanks for doin' double duty.
tires had popped off the rims. Let's
just say it was a long way back to the pits. The back tire took air and
popped back but the front rim had a prior damaged lip and had worn a hole in the side
wall. So Steve took one of the street stud tires from the
Toyota and a newer spare Volvo rim and
got the tire swapped to the Volvo rim at Rusty's garage south of Minden
on Hwy 35. I think only Steve's qualifying race was missed as he was
back within 1/2 an hour. Anyhow, it was all very entertaining perhaps
for everyone but Steve but I think he still had a hoot. You can watch some of Steve's
adventures on my Youtube channel

The weather was basically overcast all weekend and temps got up to -2C Saturday and touched on 0C Sunday. It didn't accumulate any snow and the track ice thickness was down to a couple inches in spots by end of the weekend. As a result of the warmer temps the ice was soft so I dropped tire pressures way down as far as I dared with no inner tubes to about 22 psi and got pretty good grip. I finished 2nd in all races for the weekend. Newcomer Steve Gidman and his son Mathew ran rubber to ice AWD last weekend with a fairly new and really clean looking light grey Subaru station wagon on untractionized tires. I helped him SACtionize his new Blizzaks Friday so then Saturday he went from running 2nd last to leading a race and finishing 3rd! Get a grip, get a SACtionizer eh?! There were no Lobbans this weekend so my only real competition was Brian Sexsmith in the red MR2 although Rodney Schmelter and I had a really good back and forth for a couple laps while his wicked winged wonder performed well during a brief spell Sunday. Kiyo Tabuchi showed up and blew up and then came back Sunday and did well. Tom Smith's creation - the all wheel drive, rear steering assist, snowmobile engine in the passenger seat, belt and chain driven Swift bodied concoction was finally on the track and boy does that thing ever go ! He lapped me about 1/2 way through the race. Former ice racer Glen MacKay showed up this weekend as did Tony Trevor and his wife. This weekend saw the return of Jerry Oosterholt driving a blue Toyota Corolla - there appeared to be a little bit of car control issues as the tail end happened to pass the front on a couple occasions. There was one particular new ice race guy ran old school when he took the lights out of his red street Subaru wagon, bolted aa number board to the rough, wired up running lights and raced it then drove it home with only some minor metal modifications down the driver's side of the car. Tim Penwell's Fiero continued to generate various coloured vaporous plumes as I spotted him in the infield several times this weekend. I kept richening up the air/fuel mixture on the Ovlov during Saturday and still the car seems to run out of revs on the straight but has better power in the corners now.

It was strange while driving to Minden from Whitby
on Friday because there was literally no snow at my place and as I drove
a mere hour and 45 minutes north I kept taking photographs showing the
gradual increase in snow accumulation. I put the pics together ...
