After a shaky start to this ice race season weather-wise it was with a fair bit of shock and disbelief when I woke Sunday morning to see 14" of fresh snow on the ground! Just glad we're racing at all - the first scheduled weekend (last weekend) was postponed because just not enough time to get a track prepped even though all involved worked real hard and overtime to bring it together it looked like Mother Nature just was not willing to co-operate.
This weekend
though, everything looked real good - there were banks, and enough ice to run street
studs and rubber-to-ice but not Menards - I blew 4" of snow from the
pits on Friday, 5" on Saturday and as I said 14" on Sunday morning.
The weather stayed cool at night and reached a high of -3C on Saturday and Sunday. The track ice conditions were softer due to the warmer temps and only about 4" in some spots so we saw no Menard action but there was a fair amount of grip afforded the street stud classes. The sun came out for a while on Saturday but mainly overcast on Sunday. This year I am not running the MR2 in any other class but Menards (it's too nicely fixed up and fresh paint to go bash it all up again) and since there are no Menards running this weekend I drove the Ovlov in Street Stud class 1. I got Ackers Autoglass in town to mount 2 new Street Stud tires for me on Friday for the back end of the Ovlov. I had a bad sinus problem that was being treated with antibiotics and I finished the last pill this Saturday. However they have really left me weak and without energy this weekend and even trying to mount a wheel on the Ovlov seemed a struggle. Needless to say there were fewer entries this year compared to last because of no Menards although several who had brought their Stud cars decided to run them in Street Studs. One of the more notable entries this year, the newest version of Rodney Schmelter's entry, the freshly turbo'd 4 cylinder Chevette. Of course it has a Megasquirt ignition and much time is spent "adjusting" the various parameters afforded by a link to a laptop. On many an occasion over the course of the weekend one could observe the car passing by with Rodney driving and Tim Penwell hunched over the laptop in the passenger seat trying to bring the beast to obedience. Unfortunately it's life was to be short lived - one cylinder was running too lean and "Kablooie". So Hosehead from Northbay brought down another 4 banger and the boys got permission to use Tom's shop and wailed away all Saturday night and the car was ready to run Sunday. Graham Lobban had to go home Saturday after his last race in Rubber-to-ice when he spun a bearing in his yellow Toyota MR2. I'm going to keep the reports short this year so here's a bunch of links to photos of the weekend and some video that I posted to Youtube.
